Wreckin Boyz vs DUMP, Summer League 19/7/2011

This competition just got real! Week two had some crucial matches to potentially decide the outcome of each of our division winners of the Summer League:

CHASE vs LDW

For the first time since Summer League started in 2008 CHASE have lost a game, ending an unbeaten streak of 25 games. A few teams have come close before, most notable The Swerve in 2009 took CHASE to a 9 all draw. But last night a resurgent LDW triumphed 7-6 over the Combertonians.

CHASE arrived early and warmed up. LDW arrived mostly late, with just enough players to actually start the game! The lack of players didn't deter LDW though, who took an early 2-0 lead and command of the game. At this point, the rest of LDW started turning up.

Summer League 2011 got off to a successful start. Five enthusiastic teams turned up to play the first four matches of the league, with plenty of new faces and beginners in tow. After receiving plenty of help setting up from volunteers, and a brief captain's meeting, the first matches were under way.

Summer League kicked off this past Tuesday with four teams playing in two matches.

Deep Heat vs CHASE

I didn't see much of this game, so can't comment on it's entirety. This is what I recollect.

We had heard the rumours that they were like energiser bunnies on speed but they started slowly, very slowly, wet batteries probably. In fact they didn’t even show up for our 11am game so it wasn’t until about 2pm that we managed to reschedule the game and boy did we regret it!

They thought that it would never happen but we had faith and finally the impossible has become reality....Kebab Hammer won a game!

The draw with LDW was an excellent moment because it was a really good game against the most friendly team in the League (surely they won Spirit?) but to beat a team of the pedigree of Deep Heat was a truely excellent moment!

Too fast and too fit were the complaints levelled by the older, less fit Deep Heat as SCRUFF took their first victory of the Summer League, 10-5.

In a one-sided match, SCRUFF showed that a team willing to run in both defense and offense can potentially upset many an experienced team. Often the ability of SCRUFF to break down field after a turnover proved too much as they were able to pick up scores on the break despite Deep Heat having the lion's share of posession.

The match that was billed “the peoples final” very nearly turned into a match that never was, with the LDW captain Moo struggling for players in the lead up to match. Valiant cries of “We will play with 4…the LDW never quit” were heard with only hours to go. With the match getting closer he managed to pull a team together, and for everyone’s sake we were glad he did.
